In Christ, for Television , for the Lord
A Christian Television Station in San Diego was sent my resume and replied with this today; "Dear Francis, Thank you for applying for the position as Chief Engineer at Turning Point for God. To complete your application would you please forward your Christian testimony as well as your salary history. We look forward to hearing from you soon. In Him, Human Resources""please forward your Christian testimony" ??Frankly, I have no idea what they are talking about, and I was raised Southern Baptist. |

AmericaBlog Calls For Gay Donor Boycott Of Democratic National Committee (from Joe.My.God) Some may recall that, over the summer, I posted a blog titled "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Donate." Looks like the sentiment is spreading. ************************************************************************ Under the headline Don't Ask, Don't Give, John Aravois and Joe Sudbay of the widely-read AmericaBlog today called for a boycott of LGBT donations to the Democratic party over the failures of the Obama administration and the DNC to properly support and advocate for gay causes.
Joe and I are launching today a donor boycott of the DNC. The boycott is cosponsored by Daily Kos, Michelangelo Signorile, Paul Sousa the founder of Equal Rep in Boston, and soon others. It's really more of a "pause," than a boycott. Boycotts sounds so final, and angry. Whereas this campaign is temporary, and is only meant to help some friends - President Obama and the Democratic party - who have lost their way. We are hopeful that via this campaign, our friends will keep their promises. So please sign the Petition and take a Pledge to no longer donate to the DNC, Organizing for America, or the Obama campaign until the President and the Democratic party keep their promises to the gay community, our families, and our friends. You can find our Frequently Asked Questions, below, that explain the entire campaign. You can use our "Tell a Friend" page to tell all of your friends, family members, and coworkers about this effort (and we won't keep any of the email addresses you entire, they'll all be deleted after the emails are sent). Tensions between the DNC and AmericaBlog came to a boil last week after openly gay DNC treasurer Andy Tobias revealed that the DNC had "intentionally" asked Maine contributors to support NJ Gov. Jon Corzine with no such accompanying request to help Maine's marriage equality effort.
Here are the specific beefs: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is this? We are asking voters to pledge to withhold contributions to the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America, and the Obama campaign until the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is passed, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) is repealed, and the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is repealed -– all of which President Obama repeatedly promised to do if elected.
Why are you asking people to take this pledge? Candidate Obama promised during the campaign to be the gay community’s “fierce advocate.” He and the Democratic party have not kept their promise.
Can you give examples of how the President and Democrats have not been fierce advocates for the civil rights of gay and lesbian Americans? - Asking a religious right activist who claims to have been “cured” of his homosexuality to headline campaign events in South Carolina. Then letting the anti-gay bigot spend half an hour, on stage, haranguing gays at the Obama event.
- Refusing for months to interview with LGBT newspapers during the campaign, while his opponent did repeatedly.
- Flubbing question on whether gays are immoral.
- Inviting anti-gay activist Rick Warren, who helped pass Prop 8 in California, to give the invocation at the inaugural.
- Inviting a gay bishop to the inaugural festivities, then not beginning the TV broadcast until the gay bishop has finished and left.
- Refusing to appoint an openly gay Cabinet member.
- Abolishing the LGBT outreach position at the DNC and never reinstating it.
- Refusing to re-establish the White House Office of LGBT Outreach and the White House LGBT Liaison (which was a Special Assistant to the President at one point).
- Continuing to discharge two gay servicemembers a day, even though he could stop it immediately by issuing a stop-loss order immediately.
- Asking for a study on “whether” repealing DADT would hurt national security, rather than a study on how to repeal it, as promised.
- Deleting his gay civil rights promise from the White House Web site.
- Changing his commitment to “repeal” Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, to “changing DADT it in a sensible manner.”
- Repeatedly defending DOMA in court, including just a few weeks ago, even though he didn’t have to.
- Making jokes about marriage equality, which President Obama claims he doesn't support, even though he once did.
- Comparing gay relationships to incest and pedophilia in a Justice Department brief.
- Joking about gay protesters upset about the DOMA brief.
- Refusing to provide health care benefits to the partners of gay employees, and then claiming that DOMA precludes it, when it does not.
- Refusing to meet with gay legal groups to discuss how to provide such health benefits within the confines of DOMA.
- Claiming that health benefits for partners of federal employees were new, then being caught in a lie.
- Showing visible discomfort when asked about gay civil rights.
- Suggesting he won’t get to DADT, DOMA or ENDA until his second term, if ever.
- Refusing to suspend implementation of anti-gay laws, like DADT and DOMA, while suspending laws that hurt others.
- White House staffers worked against amendment proposed by Rep. Alcee Hasting (D-FL) to defund Don't Ask, Don't Tell investigations
- Saying won’t repeal DADT until wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have finished.
- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid had to beg President Obama to help on DADT repeal.
- A White House official referring to gay civil rights advocates, marching on Washington, as part of “the Internet left fringe” whose opinions don’t matter.
- Saying he won’t touch DOMA in his first term.
- Refusing to release list of gay attendees at hate crimes reception.
- Refusing to mention Maine or Washington state, or anything of substance, in his speech to the Human Rights Campaign dinner.
- Saying gays are “naïve” for wanting the president to keep his promise.
- Refusing to issue a statement specifically opposing anti-gay ballot measures in Maine and Washington state.
- Attorney General Eric Holders flubs question on Maine, twice -- once while in Maine.
- DNC/OFA emailed supporters in Maine and Washington state, but didn't ask them to vote against anti-gay ballot measures, then lied about it.
- Senator Durbin (D-IL), a very close ally of Obama, says Senate probably won’t repeal DADT in 2010, as promised.
- Senior DNC official accuses gays and lesbians of “helping Republicans” by simply asking Democrats to keep their gay civil rights promise.
- Refusing to publicly endorse marriage equality for gays.
- Continuing to dawdle over DADT.
- Refusing to this day to interview with the gay press.
- Refusing to apologize for any of these slights.

WTF?
My office manager just walked over to me in the hallway carrying a six-month-old infant, bright blue eyes curly, red ringlets everywhere and a creamy complexion. "Guess who's kid this is!" "Not mine! I still play for the other team, last time I looked." "Very funny doc." You could have knocked me over with a feather, when when she told me who the baby's father was. Dad is a young man in his early 20s, I've taken care of since he was about 10. He's roughly our President's coloring, with similar parentage. The infant's paternal grandfather was as black as African American can get. (I say was as grandpa died in September.) Paternal grandma is Caucasian, though neither redheaded, nor blue eyed. I have met redheads prior, whose parentage seemed real unlikely to produce a redhead, yet did and some of the surprise that brings up in casual social situations. (Neither of my parents are redheaded, but at least it's obviously there within our extended family.) I see a lifetime ahead of raised eyebrows for this single dad and his little boy. First Frost means Tijuana Pie!
Stepped out this morning and ventured my way through the first frost of fall. The soccer field on the way to the train was covered in frost - but not quite a crunchy one - - - but hard frosts like that rarely come to the bay area. When I was kid - the first frost triggered Tijuana Pie from my mom. and we all knew it. I can see her seeing us off to school and going to the kitchen and pulling the recipe card. Tijuana Pie is a crockpot casserole. Layered in the crockpot between corn tortillas goes refried beans, tomatoes, ground beef, chorizos, tomatoes, cornl, chilis and repeated until the crock pot is full. this meal remains one of my most favorite to this day. It comes out not looking all that great - (it cooks down to the well, so that it looks like dog food) but man on MAN does it taste great. My Mom would serve it over a bed of salty tortilla chips with sour cream and guacamole. My parents were big believers in 'everyone comes to dinner every night' - there was NO skipping the evening meal. and as we became teenagers this became a "whining point" - but nobody was ever late for first frost tijuana pie night. I probably won't be making a pot of tijuana pie this week - because Dave is off on business travel - and well - I know myself - I'll eat the whole damn crockpot full - along with a bag of tortilla chips - an entire block of grated cheddar - and enough sour cream and guac to turn me into a Macy's Float. I think we can all agree that is something we need to skip. (wink) But I do pull the photocopy of Mom's recipes out every once in a while and make a big pot. Here's Mom's recipe with added fresh stuff.... TIJUANA PIE 1 1/2 lb. ground beef 1 medium sized can refried beans (I do the low fat low salt version these days but it's up to you) 1/2 lb. spicy chorizo sausage - finely chopped. 5 large tomatoes sliced in big bite size pieces 8 Bell Peppers (all four colours: red, green, yellow and orange) sliced into strips. 1 can smoked poblano chiles (most stores 'll have these in the mexican foods section) 1 onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 3-4 c. grated cheese 1 (10 oz.) can enchilada sauce 1 (8 oz.) tomato sauce 1 (16 oz.) can corn, drained 6 corn or flour tortillas (size depends on size of crock pot) Brown beef, onion, garlic, and seasonings. Wipe inside crock pot with oil. Place 1 tortilla in bottom. Spoon on meat mix (mix the hamburger with the refrieds) - and a little sauce and cheese. Top with another tortilla and layer on a bean, cheese and corn section. Do a layer of nothing but fresh tomatoes and bell peppers. Continue layers, ending with cheese top. Cover and cook low 5-7 hours. Serve with additional hot tortillas. (sour cream and guac feeding frenzy optional) |

My Amazon Reviews: Josh Ritter "The Golden Age of Radio" Wireless Wonderment, 4 Out of 5 Stars Maybe there was a time when radio would have picked up on a man like Josh Ritter. Perhaps the early seventies, when you could scan the dial and find the likes of James Taylor or Gordon Lightfoot. But in 2009, only National Public Radio or a dedicated folkie type of show would be picking the good stuff off of Ritter's "Golden Age Of Radio." As it is, I wound up discovering him at the 2009 Newport Folk Festival, where he and his band delivered a high energy show that blended the best of his singer-songwriter sensibility with a harder edge that bordered on Springsteen. "Golden Age" is a more homey, lo-fi type of record, mining both the singer-songwriter and Americana storytelling veins. Ritter has something of a low-tenor that isn't the best singing voice, but as he sings that he's sitting on the porch and pouring his heart out to Townes Van Sandt, you can feel he's got his heart in the right place. The arrangements are, for the most part, spartan. An accordion accents "Lawrence Kansas" while "Harrisburg" has little more than a deep bass violin (I think) underneath it to accent the despairing lyrics. When Ritter lets his band kick in ("Me and Jiggs," the title track), he starts to show the flair that I witnessed in his live shows. Given that "Golden Age Of Radio" was initially released in 2002, when Ritter was just entering his 20's, he was still working out the earnestness of the folk music he'd just discovered. This is serious stuff, and quite good; a young man on the brink of unearthing his greatest strengths. Fans of Iron and Wine or Conor Oberst will enjoy this the most. the end of san francisco's pirate cat radio
Headline in tonight's CGC Communicator, a newsletter for broadcasters; "Pirate Cat Radio, an unlicensed FM outlet in San Francisco for the past 13 years, has fallen silent following the issuance of a $10,000 Notice of Apparent Liability by the FCC." However, they say they are still on the internet, where they have more listeners than over the air anyway. Story here. |

My Amazon Reviews: Sarah McLachlin "Closer: The Best Of" Building a Discography, 4 Out of 5 Stars While she is not what one would call a highly influential singer or songwriter, Sarah McLachlin's primary contribution to the extension of musical culture is being the founder of Lilith Fair, the groundbreaking all-female musical extravaganza during the Lollapalooza festival era. Her music, an earthy/spacial mixture of new age emotions and feminine pop smarts, dovetailed nicely with many of the Lilith gang, like Paula Cole, Sinéad O'Connor or Natalie Merchant. Which makes Sarah's "Closer" a tidy wrap-up of the career she's built on that identity and her style of singing/songwriting. The singles are all here, like "Building A Mystery," "Sweet Surrender" and the moving "Angel." Most of the songs come from Sarah's middle period, comprising of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing, when she moved more towards piano based pop that found her in a calmer, thoughtful place. (Compared to the younger track, "Vox" from Touch, which seems like it wanted to be a Eurythmics song.) Once she found this groove, Sarah worked it like few others could. Her producer and working partner, Pierre Marchand, have taken these records into the earthy/atmospheric territory folks like Daniel Lanois or Brian Eno first pioneered. It makes the seven tracks from that period (eight if you count the live version of "I Will Remember You") the best on "Closer." The three from Afterglow begin showing signs of overproduction, while two new songs round out the CD. Of those two, the most telling is "U Want Me 2." It falls back to a stripped down pop base, yet keeps the earthy atmosphere of her best work. "Don't Give Up On Us" sounds like it could have come from any of her albums' outtakes and offers nothing new. For fans who haven't owned any of Sarah's other albums, "Closer" does a nice wrap-up. A quiet weekend
I goofed off all weekend. But that's ok... Fixed - I hope.
Yes, it's another post about my damn air cleaner. The JB-STIK didn't work; it's too rigid and brittle to hold on the flexible polypropylene impeller, as it turns out. So I resorted to a primarily mechanical fix: I used a piece of wire to "tie" the break together, then used some silicone glue to cover that - on the off chance the wire breaks, the glue should keep the wire from slinging off and becoming a problem of its own even though the glue's adhesion to the polypropylene is nowhere near enough to repair it by itself. Wire, of course, is easily measured, so it was simple to create a proper counterweight. The air cleaner's been running for hours now on "turbo" speed - far longer than any of the other repairs have held, so here's hoping this will last. Of course, it'll take a while for the unit to re-clean the air in here, and it'll take a while after that for my allergy symptoms to improve, but at least things are headed in the right direction. If this doesn't hold - I think I'm going to have to take henare's idea and figure out what Whirlpool (the apparent OEM) model is the equivalent, and see if they offer this as a repair part. Wow
Our old laptop has been failing for some time. We finally ordered a new MacBook. It arrived Wednesday. All I can say is WOW. As fogbear said it has "very silky aluminumity." I thought we should name it ... maybe Hal ... um no. That name for computers is forever bad juju. Kinda like John for English kings. Everything got transferred over and is working. We've had a few issues. The current one is that Airport Extreme base station goes off when the computer goes to sleep. Then Airport, itself needs to be reset. Good thing it comes with 90 days of AppleCare. Wow is the word for the day, the week, maybe even the month. |
